Route Overview & Terrain Features
This is my average total monthly spending from one year living in Seattle’s Capitol Hill, one year living in San Francisco’s Upper Haight, one year traveling to 20 countries, and one month at a hotel in Bali. It is much cheaper for me to travel. Since the majority of my costs are from trains and flights, it’s significantly cheaper if I stay in one place.

14-Day Itinerary: Day-by-Day Trail Breakdown
Starting in Hanoi, this 10-day loop drives straight into the high-altitude terrain of the Hoang Lien Son range. The route weaves through deep river valleys and high mountain ridges carved with centuries-old agricultural trails.
Day 1: Hanoi to Ba Be National Park
(6–7 Hours Saddle Time)
Break free from the Hanoi sprawl via dirt paths and agricultural dykes along the Red River basin before climbing northeast. Switch to technical red-clay trails and unpaved forestry tracks cutting through dense subtropical jungle. The day finishes with flowing lakeside single-track descending straight into the limestone basin of Ba Be Lake.
Day 2: Ba Be Lake to Khuoi Khon Village
(Bao Lac) (6 Hours Saddle Time)
Power through rocky riverbeds and unmaintained double-track into the rugged mountains of Cao Bang province. You will tackle steep gravel ascents, loose stone switchbacks, and narrow dirt trails to reach the remote hill-tribe settlement of Khuoi Khon—home to the isolated Black Lolo people.
Day 3: Khuoi Khon to Dong Van Karst Plateau
(6–7 Hours Saddle Time)
Climb out of the river valley onto high-altitude frontier single-track hugging the Chinese border. Navigate jagged limestone steps, technical rock crawls, and razor-sharp cliffside paths through the UNESCO Geo-Park, ending in the historic outpost of Dong Van.
Day 4: Dong Van to Ha Giang City
(6–7 Hours Saddle Time)
Bypass standard paved routes to conquer technical off-camber dirt tracks and steep goat paths high above the dramatic river canyons. After descending through tight switchbacks, rocky scree, and riverbeds, hit fast-paced gravel tracks running down into the foothills of Ha Giang.
Day 5: Ha Giang to Pan Hou Village
(Hoang Su Phi) (5–6 Hours Saddle Time)
Head west into the wild terraced slopes of Hoang Su Phi. This stage is packed with technical clay single-track, tight bamboo forest trails, and slick mountain paths that demand constant clutch control and standing balance before arriving at the eco-haven of Pan Hou.
Day 6: Pan Hou to Xin Man Border Trails
(5–6 Hours Saddle Time)
Carve through massive rice amphitheaters on narrow dirt ridges and rocky mountain passes. You’ll negotiate unbridged stream crossings and steep, loose-gravel climbs along the rugged frontier trails leading into the remote border town of Xin Man.
Day 7: Xin Man to Sapa via High-Pass Tracks
(6–7 Hours Saddle Time)
Throttle up steep mountain single-track crossing from Ha Giang province into the high-alpine terrain of Lao Cai. Tackle rocky shale passes, deep mud ruts, and misty mountain tracks before climbing the western shoulder of Mount Fansipan into Sapa.
Day 8: Sapa to Mu Cang Chai via O Quy Ho & Khau Pha
(6–7 Hours Saddle Time)
Descend through high alpine passes before dropping into raw off-road trails flanking the Hoang Lien Son range. You’ll tackle steep, loose-dirt climbs and rocky farm tracks weaving across the colossal rice terraces of Mu Cang Chai.
Day 9: Mu Cang Chai to Ngoc Chien Valley
(5–6 Hours Saddle Time)
Tackle an extreme off-road crossing over rugged mountain ridges into Son La province. The trail drops into the isolated valley of Ngoc Chien via steep, rutted logging paths, slick clay descents, and rocky river beds, ending with a relaxing soak in natural hot springs.
Day 10: Ngoc Chien to Nghia Lo
(5 Hours Saddle Time)
Ascend rocky mountain trails and narrow agricultural single-track out of the hidden valley. Ride through dense bamboo groves and open ridge tracks before sweeping down fast dirt roads into the sprawling tea and rice plains of Nghia Lo.
Day 11: Nghia Lo to Moc Chau Plateau
(6–7 Hours Saddle Time)
Cross the mighty Black River via local ferry and immediately dive into technical dirt trails climbing the Moc Chau plateau. Ride through limestone corridors, clay tracks, and sweeping hard-pack trails cutting through endless high-altitude tea plantations.
Day 12: Moc Chau to Mai Chau Valley
(5–6 Hours Saddle Time)
Traverse unpaved mountain roads, technical forest paths, and hidden valley trails through remote White Thai and Hmong settlements. A technical dirt descent brings you into the lush green basin of Mai Chau for an authentic homestay feast.
Day 13: Mai Chau Backcountry Dirt Circuit
(4–5 Hours Saddle Time)
A dedicated day of technical trail riding around the limestone peaks of Mai Chau and Pu Luong. Blast through bamboo single-track, stream beds, and muddy jungle paths with minimal luggage, refining your enduro technique across varied terrain.
Day 14: Mai Chau to Hanoi
(5–6 Hours Saddle Time)
Complete the grand loop by riding quiet mountain backroads, gravel tracks, and rural river trails along the Black River and Red River deltas, cruising back into Hanoi to celebrate an epic 14-day trans-highland triumph.
